Nokia 6110 Navigator

6110 Navigator Nokia picture

The Nokia 6110 Navigator is Nokia's second with built-in GPS, after the N95, and its main focus is on satellite navigation. That’s not to say it isn’t an accomplished Symbian Series 60 smartphone – it features a two-megapixel camera, a music player and HSDPA - but Nokia, with help from Route 66, has got the navigation performance spot on.
The difference between this and previous Nokia satnav GPS-equipped phones - such as the N95 and E90 - is that there's no need to download maps at each location, or pay for a full step-by-direction service. You get everything you need in the box. Rather than using Nokia's own Nokia Maps service, the 6110 Navigator uses Route 66's software and Navteq's mapping in conjunction with the built-in GPS antenna.

You can also home in on nearby restaurants, petrol stations and shops, and even search from your Contacts -- a great option if you've synched your PC's address book (simple enough with the supplied software). However, this annoyingly only picks up the right address about half the time, especially if you've neglected to add postcodes.
Don't judge the 6110 by its sluggish first-time lock on time (about five minutes). After that, it reliably finds its position within a minute of activation, even through a window -- a feat we can only attribute to the smart 'assisted GPS' (AGPS) technology. This uses a packet data Internet connection to deliver pinpoint accuracy, without making a noticeable impact on your bill.
Route calculation is fast and pretty much faultless. In pedestrian mode, the display rotates to match your direction of motion, although the display of street names can be erratic. It's clearer and simpler in motorised mode, with bright, cartoony arrows and crisp, loud voice commands. Setting up a roadblock detour is simple enough, but don't expect advanced features such as being able to set multiple way-points.
The Nokia 6110 has capable multimedia talents. It runs just like other Symbian Series 60 smartphones – easy-to-use and ripe for third-party software – while you get a two-megapixel camera with a neat active sliding lens cover. It takes decent snaps, despite underperforming on close-ups, and video is shot in a respectable but still judder-tastic 320 x 240pixel resolution. A full HTML web browser lets you surf the mobile internet over fast HSDPA speeds while business types can retrieve their emails, get organised with its PIM functionality or view documents on the Quick Office app suite.
The 6110 Navigator is perfect for those who spend their life on the road and need a convenient convergence package to keep them company on their travels.
