6111 Nokia picture

Nokia has always tried to made a decent job of being all things to all men - and women, for that matter. From unadulterated functionality and ease of use to high concept models - such as the keyless Nokia 7380 - the Finnish giant has gone a long way in covering all the bases. The real challenge, though, is to marry up these two approaches without compromise.
The Nokia 6111 looks like a small bar of shiny soap. It comes in three colours -- black, silver and pink -- with a mirrored frame. At 92 g, the Nokia 6111 is lighter than most phones, but not as light as Samsung's E350 slide phone, which weighs a mere 75 g. It fits well in the pocket at only 84 by 47 by 23 mm and can be kept away from prying eyes in the palm of your hand.
The Nokia 6111 is small compared to other handsets. This is the first time Nokia has used this particular slide mechanism. It seems almost identical to Samsungs D600 and is made up of a solid bottom section and a thinner top section that is spring mounted, so you only need to open it halfway before it springs open. For those of you obsessed with the how the slide feels, the mechanism is clunky and, as with all slide phones, there is the danger of opening it while you take it out of your pocket.

The limited memory will also affect music playback. While the Nokia 6111 supports both AAC and MP3, you won’t be able to keep many songs on board if you want high-res images and video as well. When it comes to music playback, the volume of the speakers is impressive. The quality is better than average, but still pretty much what you’d expect from a mobile, while plugging in the supplied headset raises the playback quality considerably.
The camera is a megapixel model, which is surprising in a phone this small. Snaps taken with the Nokia 6111 are easily good enough to show up the highlights of a holiday or a night out, and benefit from a comprehensive array of effects, including a bright LED flash and 6x digital zoom. An especially good feature is the landscape mode, meaning that shots taken sideways get turned the right way up automatically. The lens also takes decent quality video footage in the 3 GP format used for multimedia messaging.
Multimedia messaging is fully supported on the Nokia 6111, for sending pictures and video of up to 10 seconds in length, but there are other ways of sending media. If you want to get full quality images off the phone, or video any longer than 10 seconds, both Bluetooth and infrared are available, as well as an optional data cable for PC connectivity.
The audio on calls can be quiet and you may find yourself asking people to speak up. The speakerphone works well and the headphones provide good audio. You can also use a Bluetooth headset -- we had no problems in maintaining a connection with this. The battery lasts around five to six days on standby, and Nokia quotes two to three hours' talk time.
