At first glance you'd never guess that the Nokia 6280 is a 3G handset. Yes, it's a little on the fat side and it's larger overall than other sliders, such as the lovely Samsung SGH-D600, but hey, it is a slider, and it doesn't look out of place sitting among of non-3G handsets.
3G might not even be the killer feature for you. There's an FM radio, a reasonably good camera and bundled PC synchronising software to take into account too. And the price is pretty attractive.
Four king-sized keys adorn the front fascia. These soft and call buttons have a generous footprint and make handling the phone a doddle. The square five-way navigation pad that dissects these keys is malleable and highly responsive. Integrated into the key quartet is a slider grip for a good purchase when propelling the façade open and shut while just above is the stunning 2.2-inch, QVGA-quality display. A top-notch screen is important to realise 3G video potential, and Nokia has certainly obliged. The colours are vivid with rich detail and dazzling luminosity.

A fair array of connectors and buttons sit around the edges of the Nokia 6280. The right edge has a volume rocker and camera quick-launch and shutter button. The lens, flash unit and self-portrait mirror are on the back.
The left edge has a covered slot for miniSD cards, which can be used to expand the built-in memory, a push-to-talk key, which is mapped to the built-in voice recorder out of the box, and an infrared port, which we're pleased to see.
The numberpad is reasonably large, but its top row of keys are far too close to the upper section, and anyone with large thumbs might find it difficult to hit them successfully.
The Nokia 6280 plays the MP4 format, which is even more compressed than MP3 files and near CD quality. You can use the PC software to transfer your digital music files onto the phone. Lodged in the side of the phone is a small speaker that pumps out fine audio whether listening to music, video audio or conversation during a video call.
The Nokia 6280 adopts the dual-front camera pose famously pioneered by Sony Ericsson, which lets you handle the phone like a standalone digital snapper. The handset’s size and weight lend lend themselves nicely to this operation. The 2megapixel camera can be fired up by a dedicated side key and shoots photos in a 1600 x 1200 resolution. In capture mode, you can easily delve into the settings menu to change modes. It really is one of the simplest camera phones to manage. The photos themselves are of consistent quality, showing good detail, but can be prone to overblown highlights and a lack of focus around the periphery.
