E61 Nokia picture

Nokia's E61 is one of three newly available E-series handsets and a fourth is on the way. Like its relatives the E50 and E60, the E61 is aimed at business users, but uniquely among the E range it has a very familiar look to it, reminiscent of the original BlackBerry.

The Nokia E61’s form factor inevitably leads to comparisons with the BlackBerry 8700 and Palm Treo 650, and this device would make a smart alternative to either due to its wealth of talents. It boasts a more powerful armoury than either, with 3G speeds, Wi-Fi, Voice over IP (VoIP) call capabilities and a 16-million-colour display all at your service. All this is crammed into a very sleek chassis, with a suitably slim profile and a metallic silver finish, which frames the large, high-resolution (320x240-pixel) screen. This landscape display is the perfect platform for viewing and editing documents and to experience full web browsing.

The six control keys comprise call and end keys, two for the menus and two, sitting left and right of a very sturdy and responsive mini joystick, which take you to the Nokia applications menu and messaging centre -- mobile email being a key feature of the device.

Built-in Wi-Fi and 3G make downloading web pages speedy, and the spacious display makes it easy. There is also Nokia's proprietary Mini-map browsing technique, which displays the whole web page as you would see it on the PC but pulls out magnified views of the area you want to read in detail. This makes internet browsing so much easier on small-sized displays. As with many of today’s business phones, there’s no camera, which isn’t a problem in itself. However, it means users will only be able to make one-way video conference calls, which isn’t ideal. For time off, there is a built-in MP3/AAC music player, and some fantastic Symbian and Java-based games.

There is 64MB of built-in memory and Nokia provides a further 64MB in a miniSD card, which should be enough to get you started. with what is, quite probably, likely to be Nokia's most compelling alternative to the BlackBerry.

Another useful application is Psiloc Wireless Presenter, which turns your handset into a PowerPoint control panel and remote control. You can view, adjust and prompt slides both on the device and wall projection. While the BlackBerry remains top dog for push-email set-up and ease of use, the Nokia E61 has cranked up the stakes with a more powerful and fully connected mobile office device.
