Nokia N90 review

N90 Nokia picture

This is a big handset, but, unlike other clamshells, it is made up of three (rather than two) sections. Nokia has gone to town to incorporate the high-end Carl Zeiss optics, and while the company has come up with a camera phone that is superior to the competition in terms of image quality, maybe it has actually overdesigned the hardware to accommodate it.
It's a pocket-bulging 11.2cm long, nearly 2.5cm wide and weighs enough (175g) that it can double as a weapon if a mugger takes a shine to its retro-modern two-tone styling.
Of course, Nokia would have you believe that the N90 is more than just another 2.5G tri-band cameraphone - it's a multimedia powerhouse, capable of recording and editing 2MP images and video clips, and much more besides.

The N90 has a 2 megapixel camera with autofocus, 20x digital zoom, a flash and a macro mode (for close-ups). It uses Carl Zeiss optics (an impressive name in the photographic world) to deliver photos that are far superior to those found on other camera phones, even those with a 2 megapixel resolution. This is a print quality camera, and for the first time you can reasonably consider a camera phone to be a replacement for a dedicated digital camera, although it clearly can't compete with the more expensive digital cameras with several times more megapixels. The camcorder capability is equally impressive.
Finally a word on memory. There is 27MB free internally and if you use this handset as it is meant to be used, you will probably soon fill that. Nokia provides a 64MB RS-MMC card for expansion, though even that may not be enough if you want to carry a lot of multimedia, such as video and tunes.
The N90 is, as promised, much more than just a phone. The only worry is that Nokia has squeezed so many functions and so much flexibility into a single handset that it's in danger of being seen as a 'lite' PDA rather than a portable communication device.
